Service Awards 2009
PSNZ Service Medal 2009 – Bill Hodges APSNZ, AFIAP
PSNZ Service Medals are awarded for outstanding service to Photography, over a significant period of time.
This award is being presented to a man who is a current member of both the Tauranga Photographic Society and the North Shore Photography Clubs.
He was on the North Shore Club committee in 1993, 1994, and 1995 and was their projectionist. He then served on the Tauranga Photographic Society in 1998, 1999 and again in 2003 and 2004.
He has done his utmost to foster amateur photography, mentoring aspiring photographers in the move from film to digital, long before others recognised the huge shift the new medium would have on our craft. He did this by running workshops both at clubs and at home. Topics include Slide Film, Still Life, Portrait using Flash, Portrait using Studio Lights, DSLR Camera use, and software use for Photoshop and Proshow Gold.
He has also willingly shared his passion and knowledge often as guest speaker to the clubs in the area, such as Waikato, Rotorua and Tauranga. He was a speaker at the Waikato Northern Regional Convention.
As a judge, he has given his time to The North Shore Salon, Rotorua, Waikato, South Waikato, Greymouth, Thames, Christchurch, The Images Group, for many as an annual event. He has worked with others on a panel for Gisbourne Central Regional Conference, The George Chance Salon and just recently Natex.
Outside these commitments, he organized the Trans Tasman Competition for 3 years and then assisted for several more.
For the last 6 years he has the very successful Canon on Line competition, a bi-monthly task that has had him in touch with many PSNZ members right throughout New Zealand.
Each year at the PSNZ National Conference, his audio visual presentation of the competition awards has met with well deserved acclaim.
It is therefore with pleasure, that a PSNZ Service Medal is awarded to Bill Hodges APSNZ, AFIAP
PSNZ Service Medal 2009 – Brian Cudby FPSNZ, SFIAP
PSNZ Service Medals are awarded for outstanding service to photography, over a significant period of time.
This award is being presented to a man who has been involved in several aspects of the Photographic Society of New Zealand.
He has served on the PSNZ Council for 6 years with 2 of these as President of the Society.
He has been the driving force behind the FIAP organisation in New Zealand, encouraging participation by our members at several levels. He has increased the interest in FIAP awards to a point where we now have a growing number undergoing this five year system of gaining FIAP Distinction, and consequently a number of people have already earned their FIAP letters. He has also encouraged PSNZ members to attend International FIAP Congresses and he himself has been a New Zealand representative at many Congress meetings. The FIAP saw fit to award this man a service medal in 2008 for his work with the FIAP.
PSNZ interests have always been put ahead of this man’s personal interests and consequently have contributed greatly to photographic understanding on an International level.
Along with that, he has assisted Judy Hodge FPSNZ, to mount International Exhibitions of our members’ work, raising the profile of our Society overseas. In 2008, the New Zealand set was placed 11th in the world.
He was also involved in setting up the Panel Judging Group that Robyn Forryan now heads up, and is currently serving on this panel. This is a very important aspect to PSNZ members and he continues to do a considerable amount of judging at Camera Clubs in the North of the North Island.
Workshops around the country on audio visual programs are run where he gives his time willingly. He is currently the Patron of the Auckland Photographic Society and is always available to help and guide the club. The club membership has grown considerably in part due to this man’s enthusiasm and guidance. He is always available to young or less experienced photographers.
It is therefore with pleasure, that a PSNZ Service Medal is awarded to Brian Cudby FPSNZ, SFIAP
PSNZ Service Medal 2009 – Ron McKie FPSNZ, ARPS
PSNZ Service Medals are awarded for outstanding service to photography, over a significant period of time.
This award is being presented to a man who has been involved in several aspects of the Photographic Society of New Zealand.
He has previously served on the PSNZ Honours Board and is a current member of the Christchurch Photographic Society where he is one of the most successful exhibitors.
Within a short period of this man’s return to New Zealand after a 16 year span working in Papua New Guinea, he accepted an appointment to the position of Treasurer for the Photographic Society of New Zealand, and has served in this role with distinction over the past 4 years.
During this time the Society has experienced significant growth and many new dimensions have been added to the Treasurer’s role. He was in the forefront of developing a new database for the Society.
Along with this came a change to a new accounting system (MYOB) enabling members to renew their subscriptions by the internet and also resulting in members being able to make payments by credit card for the first time. This has been particularly helpful in facilitating sales of the ‘New Zealand Camera’ book.
He has prepared sound budgets, monitored the Society’s expenditure, and invested its funds prudently. He has dealt promptly and efficiently with hundreds of e-mails received from members each year – not necessarily all confined to accounting matters!
On his watch, the Society has consistently turned in good financial performances and its funds are now in a very healthy state.
It is therefore with pleasure, that a PSNZ Service Medal is awarded to Ron McKie FPSNZ, ARPS

He was made an Honorary Life Member in 1980 and in 1990 he wrote a comprehensive history of the Society to celebrate it’s 100th Anniversary. He also edited the Society’s Journal “ Camera Craft” for 5 years and was the Society’s Auditor for 19 years.
