Results of the 23rd NZ Photojournalism Competition, 2014

Thanks to all who entered the competition this year, there were some exciting and intriguing images for our judges to look over.

Our judges this year were all from the Christchurch area – Ken Baker, Gilbert Wealleans (Mainland Press photographer), John Hoeben APSSA  (judging prints only), and John Stewart LPSNZ (judging digital only).

The Judges were unanimous in choosing the overall champion image, a delightful study of childhood determination.

Congratulations to all award-winners, your images really stood out from the crowd.

Unfortunately, a few entrants had not read the rules carefully enough, and we had a number of very good images that were discarded from consideration due to obvious processing which had altered the essential ‘truth’ of the image. Selective colouration & overly-obvious HDR were the most common problems the judges identified.

Entries were slightly down, possibly due to the sheer number of photographic competitions available to enter at this time of the year. The NBPC has now implemented some changes to the competition for next year, which broaden the categories we cater for, and will, we hope, encourage more entries and interest. Keep an eye out for the new rules and conditions on our website in the near future.
